Who it’s for

Four situations, and outside them the money is hard to justify. A family that does not want to time a toddler to a coach timetable. Anyone travelling with real mobility limits — Daniel from Germany wrote that his guide Coco “ensured my mother could participate despite mobility challenges”, and Ariane from the US noted the “easy access to sites with short walks. Comfortable car.” A first or last day built around a flight, because this is the only tour on the site that will collect you at the airport. And a group of three or more, where the per-head arithmetic starts to work.

The listed price covers a group of up to three people, in a vehicle rated for up to seven; larger groups are priced differently at the time of booking. For three people that lands in the same territory as three seats on the Blue Lagoon combo, which is the comparison I would actually run. No smoking or vaping in the vehicle.

The day in order

The core route is fixed and the extras are yours to choose, at extra cost. Hot drinks and Wi-Fi are in the car; Kerið’s entrance fee is included.

1. Pickup at Keflavík airport or your Reykjavík hotel.
2. Þingvellir, 45 minutes — Lögberg, the church, and Hrafnagjá if you want it.
3. Geysir, 30 minutes.
4. Gullfoss, 30 minutes.
5. Kerið, 15 minutes, entrance included.
6. Optional, at extra cost: hot-spring bread baking, the Efstidalur dairy, the Geysir Centre, the Brú horse farm, the Gullfoss café, or 1.5 hours at the Secret Lagoon.

Note the shape of that: 45 minutes at Þingvellir, half an hour each at Geysir and Gullfoss, a quarter of an hour at Kerið. It is a leaner core than the German-language itinerary because the space is left for the optional stops you pick. Elizabeth from the US did the dairy and lunch at Geysir; somebody else will do the bread baking and skip the horses.

The twenty-six-review problem

A perfect score from a small sample tells you that nothing has gone badly wrong yet. It does not tell you what happens on the day the regular guide is ill or the vehicle needs swapping, because with twenty-six bookings behind it that day may not have happened. Compare it with the full-day coach, where 26,856 ratings mean the average already includes every bad Tuesday the operator has had.

I would still book it in the four situations above, because the alternatives do not exist. What I would not do is read 5.0 as proof that it is the best tour on this page. It is the most flexible one, which is a different claim, and flexibility is what you are paying for. Is it worth the money?

Split three ways it is roughly what the Blue Lagoon combo costs per head, and you get a vehicle that waits for you. Split two ways it is a lot. Alone it is indefensible unless the reason is medical or logistical, in which case it is the only thing on the menu. If the attraction is simply a smaller vehicle rather than a private one, the nineteen-seat minibus gets you most of the way for a fraction of it, and the whole ladder is on the prices page.
